What is a migraine?

A migraine is a type of headache that can cause severe, throbbing pain, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light or sound. Migraines are believed to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors that affect brain chemistry and blood vessels. They can last anywhere from a few hours to several days and are often debilitating.

What are the symptoms of a migraine?

Common symptoms of a migraine include:

  • Intense, throbbing headache on one side of the head
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light, sound, or smells
  • Visual disturbances such as flashes of light or blind spots (aura)
  • Fatigue and difficulty concentrating

How do you treat migraines?

Migraine treatment focuses on relieving symptoms during an episode and preventing future attacks. Medications like triptans, anti-inflammatory drugs, and anti-nausea medicines are often used. Lifestyle changes and preventive therapies, including daily medications, may also help reduce frequency and severity.

Is a chat-visit right for me?

You may be a good candidate for a chat-consult with Well Revolution if:

  • You're 16 years or older.
  • You have a prior diagnosis of migraines.
  • Your symptoms are not new or drastically different from past episodes.
  • You do not have a fever or stiff neck accompanying your headache.
  • You are not experiencing sudden, severe, or “thunderclap” headaches.
  • You do not have a history of stroke, heart attack, or severe cardiovascular disease.

If your symptoms are severe or unusual, please seek in-person care immediately.

Common migraine treatments

Your Well Revolution provider will determine which (if any) treatment is medically appropriate based on your symptoms and health history. If prescribed medication, pick it up at a pharmacy of your choice.

Treatment for migraines typically involves a combination of acute (relief during an attack) and preventive (reducing future attacks) strategies.

Acute Migraine Relief

Used at the onset of a migraine to reduce pain and symptoms:

  • Triptans:
Sumatriptan (Imigran), Rizatriptan (Rizamelt) — prescription medications that target serotonin receptors to stop migraines in progress.
  • Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs):
Ibuprofen, Naproxen — help relieve pain and inflammation.
  • Anti-nausea Medications:
Metoclopramide, Ondansetron — used when nausea or vomiting is present.

Preventive Migraine Treatments

Taken regularly to reduce the frequency or severity of migraines:

  • Beta-blockers:
Propranolol — helps reduce the number of migraine attacks in some people.
  • Antiepileptics:
Topiramate — alters nerve activity and can reduce migraine frequency.
  • CGRP Inhibitors (Injectable Preventives):
Ajovy (fremanezumab) and Emgality (galcanezumab) — newer treatments targeting the CGRP pathway.
Approved in NZ but not publicly funded (available via private prescription)

Injectable treatments and nerve blocks may not be available through Chat-consult.
