What is atopic dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis, often called eczema, is a common chronic skin condition in New Zealand that causes itchy, red, inflamed patches of skin. It arises from a mix of genetic predisposition, environmental triggers (like pollen or humidity), and immune system reactions. Symptoms range from dry, cracked skin to intense itching, which can sometimes lead to infections from scratching.

How do you treat atopic dermatitis?

Treatment focuses on calming inflammation, soothing itch, repairing the skin barrier, and preventing infections. Available options include topical treatments, oral medications, and biologics for moderate‑to‑severe cases.

Is a chat-visit right for me?

You may be a good candidate for a chat-consult with Well Revolution if:

  • You’re over 16years old.
  • You have a previous diagnosis of atopic dermatitis.
  • Your symptoms are not severe enough to require in-person care or hospitalization.
  • You’re not experiencing significant skin infection (e.g., oozing, pus, or fever).
  • You’re not experiencing widespread eczema that impacts your daily functioning.

If your symptoms are severe or worsening, please seek in-person care immediately.

Common atopic dermatitis treatments

Your Well Revolution provider will determine which treatment is best suited to your symptoms and medical history. If medication is prescribed, you can pick it up at a pharmacy of your choice.

Treatment for atopic dermatitis typically involves:

  • Biologic Therapies: Dupixent (dupilumab) – a biologic for adults with moderate‑to‑severe cases.
  • Topical Corticosteroids: Hydrocortisone, Betnovate (betamethasone), Eumovate (clobetasone butyrate)
  • Topical Calcineurin Inhibitors: Protopic (tacrolimus), Elidel (pimecrolimus)
  • Oral Antihistamines: Cetirizine, Loratadine
  • Moisturisers: CeraVe, Dermaveen, QV, Physiogel

Advanced biologic therapies like Dupixent may be recommended if topical treatments aren't effective. Oral steroids and immunotherapy aren't available through Chat‑visit.
