Wegovy click-counting is a practice some patients use to track the number of “clicks” while dosing fromtheir Wegovy pen. The idea? That counting clicks can help them control or skip ahead in doses, sometimes even stretch out a pen to save money.
But is this a clever workaround, or a dangerous shortcut?
Here are the most common questions we get about click counting, and what you need to know before trying it.
In New Zealand, Wegovy pens come as multi-dose FlexTouch pens, each containing four weekly doses. Wegovy pens make a “clicking” sound as you twist the dial to set the dose. Some patients count these clicks to estimate how far along the pen is or how many doses are left.
Some also try to measure the difference between doses (e.g. 0.25mg vs 0.5mg) by the number of clicks, and use this to jump ahead or take smaller/larger amounts than prescribed.
The number of clicks per dose depends on the pen’s design and strength. For example, from a 2.4mg pen:
However, this isn’t an exact science. The number of clicks can vary slightly depending on the batch or pen model. The pen wasn’t designed for “click-counting” as a precise measurement tool.

Technically, yes. Some people attempt to “skip ahead” by counting clicks and adjusting the dose manually. But this is not safe or recommended.
Changing doses outside of medical guidance increases the risk of side effects like nausea, vomiting, low blood sugar, or even severe gastrointestinal issues.
The most common reasons include:
While understandable, none of these are medically sound reasons to override the prescribed dosing schedule.
Click counting is not a medically approved way to use Wegovy.
While some patients share “click maps” online or compare experiences in forums, these shortcuts often involve off-label use and can carry real risks.
Jumping doses or adjusting based on feel (or clicks) may increase side effects, delay progress, or put your treatment at risk.
Most GPs strongly advise against click counting.
Wegovy is designed to follow a stepwise dose increase, allowing your body to adjust. Skipping steps can lead to more side effects, and can also make it harder to stay on treatment long term.
If you’re ever running low, missed a dose, or have questions, it’s always better to ask your doctor or pharmacist first.
Don't adjust your dose yourself.

Click counting might seem like a smart hack, but the risks usually outweigh the benefits. It’s always safer to stick to medically reviewed plans and talk to your doctor if anything feels off.
