About Mounjaro

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription medicine used for chronic weight management in adults who are overweight or have obesity, and have at least one weight-related health condition. It's the first medication to target both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, two hormones involved in appetite regulation and blood sugar control.

How is Mounjaro used?
Mounjaro is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. It is given as a once-weekly injection under the skin using the KwikPen. Your doctor will start you on a low dose and gradually increase it to minimise side effects.

Can I get a prescription?
Mounjaro is prescribed if:

  • Your BMI is 30 or higher, or
  • Your BMI is 27 or higher, and you have weight-related health issues such as prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or sleep apnoea.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Mounjaro

What does Mounjaro cost?

Our service fee is $80 for 3 months of care. This includes your initial consultation, prescription for 3 months of treatment, and unlimited follow-up and support. The cost of Mounjaro itself is separate and is paid directly to the pharmacy. Mounjaro costs between $430 and $875 per month in New Zealand, depending on your dose.

Is Mounjaro safe?

Mounjaro has been approved by Medsafe for use in New Zealand for weight management and type 2 diabetes. Like all medicines, it can have side effects, and it should only be used under medical supervision.

Do I still need to diet and exercise?

Yes. Mounjaro works best alongside healthy eating and regular physical activity. Clinical trials showed the best results when medication was combined with lifestyle changes.

How do I take Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is taken once a week by injection under the skin using the KwikPen, usually in the abdomen or thigh. Pen needles are sold separately.

Who can't take Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone. It should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or by people with certain medical conditions including a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma. Your doctor will assess whether it is safe for you.

How is Mounjaro different from Wegovy?

Mounjaro targets two hormones (GIP and GLP-1), while Wegovy targets only GLP-1. Clinical trials show Mounjaro may produce greater average weight loss, with participants losing up to 22.5% of body weight compared to approximately 15% with Wegovy.
