If you've never given yourself an injection before, it can feel intimidating. The good news: Mounjaro uses a simple pen device that makes the process straightforward. Here's what you need to know.
The Mounjaro KwikPen
Mounjaro comes in a pre-filled pen device. You don't need to draw up medication or handle needles separately. The pen does most of the work, you just need to:
- Attach a new needle
- Select your dose
- Insert and press the button
- Dispose safely
Where to Inject
Approved injection sites include:
- Abdomen: At least 5cm away from your belly button; avoid the area directly around it
- Front of thighs: Middle section of the upper leg
- Back of upper arms: This can be harder to reach yourself; some people get help
Why Site Rotation Matters
Don't inject in the same spot every time. Rotating sites:
- Prevents lumps or hardened areas (lipohypertrophy)
- Reduces skin irritation
- Ensures consistent absorption
A simple rotation: use your left side one week, right side the next. Within each side, vary the exact spot slightly.
Step-by-Step Injection
- Wash your hands thoroughly
- Check the medication: It should be clear and colourless; don't use if cloudy or contains particles
- Attach a new needle to the pen
- Clean the injection site with an alcohol swab; let it dry
- Pinch the skin gently (optional, but can help)
- Insert the needle at a 90-degree angle
- Press and hold the button until the pen indicates the dose is complete
- Wait 10 seconds before removing the needle
- Remove and dispose of the needle in a sharps container
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Injecting into bruised or irritated skin: Wait for healing first
- Rushing: Hold the button and wait the full time
- Not rotating sites: This causes problems over time
- Reusing needles: Always use a fresh needle
- Injecting cold medication: Let it reach room temperature first (reduces discomfort)
Managing Discomfort
Most people find injections minimally painful, but if you experience discomfort:
- Let the pen warm to room temperature before injecting
- Inject slowly
- Try different sites to find what's most comfortable
- Relax the muscle in the injection area
Timing Your Injection
- Choose the same day each week
- Set a phone reminder
- You can take it any time of day, with or without food
- Some people prefer evenings (to sleep through any initial nausea)
Disposal
Used needles must go in a sharps container, not regular rubbish. You can:
- Get a sharps container from your pharmacy
- Return full containers to pharmacies for safe disposal
