When people ask "Is Mounjaro available in New Zealand?", the answer depends on what they mean by "available." There are actually three separate questions, and understanding the difference helps you know what to expect.
This means the medicine has been assessed for safety and quality, and a data sheet exists in New Zealand. Medsafe approved Mounjaro in December 2025 for both type 2 diabetes and chronic weight management.
However, approval doesn't mean you can walk into a pharmacy and buy it. It simply means the medicine is legally permitted to be prescribed and sold in NZ.
This is whether the government subsidises the cost through Pharmac. A funded medicine costs much less out-of-pocket (often just a $5 prescription fee).
Mounjaro is not currently funded for weight loss in New Zealand. Pharmac's advisory committee (PTAC) has discussed tirzepatide for diabetes, but there's no indication that weight management funding is coming soon.
This means if you want Mounjaro, you'll pay the full private prescription cost.
This is whether the medicine is actually stocked in pharmacies and available to purchase. Even with Medsafe approval, supply depends on:
As of early 2026, commercial supply is expected but timing remains unclear.
Online information often conflates these three concepts. You might read "Mounjaro is approved in NZ" and assume you can get it tomorrow. Or you might see "not funded" and think it's banned.
The reality: Mounjaro is approved, not funded, and supply is still being established.
At Well Revolution, we're tracking Mounjaro availability closely and will notify interested patients when it becomes accessible. In the meantime, Wegovy is available now as an effective alternative.
